Apple's new macOS Monterey operating system[1] is now ready for download on Mac computers.

The updated operating system was first unveiled in June during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The new OS improves FaceTime, introduces a Focus Mode that works with your iPhone, and adds new capabilities to Notes, mail privacy protection, and other areas.

The most noticeable improvement to macOS, though, is device continuity. A new feature called Universal Control, in particular, allows you to operate smoothly between your iPad, MacBook, and iMac. For example, you can use the keyboard or mouse on one device to navigate across the screens of the others by placing them next to each other.
Drag & drop files between devices with universal control, making it easier to collaborate on the same or distinct projects.

In Monterey, new shortcuts are also accessible, allowing you to automate your daily routines. The update gives you access to prebuilt Mac shortcuts, or you may link together a series of operations to create shortcuts for your workflows.

Furthermore, Monterey introduces a redesigned Safari experience with a streamlined tab bar that directly incorporates the active tab's search feature. In addition, the new tab bar adopts the color of the site you're watching, making it appear to be a part of the page. Finally, tab Groups are a new feature in Safari that allows you to keep your tabs in specific topics or groups and retrieve them later, even across devices.

macOS Monterey is available for free download from the System Preferences menu on Macs with Apple silicon and Intel-based Macs. The macOS upgrade arrives one month after the iOS 15 update, including many of the same changes.
